About MicroMPX
What is MicroMPX ?
In FM broadcast typically a complex multiplex (also known as composite) signal is used to feed the transmitter. In order to give listeners a full broadcast experience the multiplex signal (MPX) consists of audio and several subcarriers (e.g. pilot and R(B)DS carriers) .
Details about the FM MPX signal is explained in this wiki page:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FM_broadcasting#Stereo_FM
MicroMPX is the world first codec application to transport this complex MPX signal over an IP network at a reasonable bandwith. (default: 320kb/s) MicroMPX is also capable to send MPX to multiple transmitters simultaneously (synchonised).
So, what’s in it for you ?
In classic FM Broadcast systems the audio is send to the transmitter sites, so at every transmitter site a STL limiter, stereo-generator and RDS generator is needed to generate the MPX and is than fed to a transmitter. The MPX needs some clipping to get some loudness in the MPX domain.
Usually all transmitter sites are equipped with an FM broadcast processor, and an RDS encoder.
With MicroMPX this is not needed;
The FM broadcast processor, RDS encoder and a MicroMPX encoder is seated at the studio site.
The digitalised MicroMPX stream from the studio is streamed via IP to as many transmitter sites as your bandwidth allows.
At the transmitter site a MicroMPX decoder is used to convert the MicroMPX stream to analogue MPX to feed the transmitters.
This saves money!
Especially when multiple transmitters are used for the same program:
- A Phantomtronics MicroMPX decoder is power efficient (10W)
- You don’t need any stereo generators, audio processors or RDS encoders at the transmitter site.
- This saves rack space at the transmitters sites; Often rack space costs money !
- This makes dynamic RDS and playout integration easier, since the RDS encoder is in the studio.
